About the Role

We are seeking a Trustee who can support how we communicate, collaborate, and operate as part of the wider RSPCA network.

This role focuses on strengthening our communications and outreach, building relationships with partners and other branches, and ensuring we are connected, aligned, and making the most of opportunities across the RSPCA family.

Alongside this, we are looking for someone who can provide light-touch oversight and guidance on cyber awareness and data protection. Our needs are not highly technical, but it is important that we are operating safely and in line with good practice.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in helping the Branch raise its profile, build partnerships, and work more effectively within a wider network.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic guidance on communications and outreach, helping the Branch raise its profile and engage effectively with local communities
  • Support the development of a clear and consistent approach to communications, both internally and externally
  • Strengthen relationships with other RSPCA branches and the national organisation, identifying opportunities to collaborate, share learning, and align activity
  • Identify opportunities to grow the Branch’s supporter base through improved engagement and visibility
  • Provide oversight and advice on cyber security, data protection, and digital risk, ensuring appropriate safeguards are in place
  • Support the Branch Manager and volunteers in improving communication processes and coordination
  • Contribute to Board discussions, offering constructive challenge and independent judgement

Skills & Experience

  • Communications or outreach experience: Experience in communications, stakeholder engagement, partnerships, or community outreach
  • Relationship building: Strong ability to build and maintain relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Network awareness: Experience working across organisations or within a network or federated structure
  • Strategic thinking: Ability to identify opportunities to improve visibility, engagement, and collaboration
  • Cyber awareness: General understanding of cyber security and data protection principles (no technical expertise required)
  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, and external partners

Experience with the RSPCA or a similar federated charity structure is highly desirable but not essential.

General Trustee Responsibilities

  • Support and uphold the charity’s purpose, vision, and values
  • Ensure effective governance, compliance, and administration -Oversee financial planning, reporting, and accountability
  • Review and approve financial statements
  • Monitor organisational performance and risk management
  • Provide support and constructive challenge to the Branch Manager
  • Stay informed about changes in the operating environment
  • Act with integrity, independence, and in the best interests of the charity

  • Can think strategically while being practical and supportive where needed
  • Is comfortable advising on communications and basic cyber considerations
  • Communicates clearly and works well with a range of stakeholders
  • Is motivated by improving animal welfare
  • Is willing to take on the responsibilities and legal duties of a Trustee

You do not need prior governance experience—we provide full induction and training.

Your contribution will directly support our ability to care for animals in need. By strengthening our retail income, you will help unlock more resources to deliver essential services and improve animal welfare outcomes across our region.

Our voluntary roles are subject to an informal interview and trial period. We will ask you to provide contact details for two referees, and depending on the position, you may need to sign an agreement and undergo specific training before starting the role.
