Trap, Neuter, Return Volunteer (South London Branch)

Opportunity image

We are looking for several volunteers who can help us safely trap, transport and return unowned and feral cats in our local community.

TNR is an important part of preventing unwanted litters and improving the welfare of cats living without an owner. By trapping cats safely, arranging for them to be neutered and returning them to their territory, we can help prevent feral cat populations from growing and improve the lives of the cats already there.

Your tasks may include:

  • Setting and monitoring humane traps
  • Safely handling and transporting trapped cats
  • Taking cats to veterinary appointments or agreed neutering facilities
  • Returning cats to their territory following neutering and recovery
  • Monitoring cats and reporting any concerns to the branch team
  • Working with members of the public and our team to support TNR cases

You do not need previous TNR experience. Full training will be provided, but we are looking for people who are already comfortable being around cats and handling them safely.

You will need to:

  • Have a genuine interest in cat welfare
  • Be comfortable handling cats, including nervous or unsocialised cats
  • Be reliable and able to follow instructions carefully
  • Have access to a car and be able to drive, as the role involves travelling between trapping locations and veterinary appointments
  • Have some availability during the working week
  • Be able to easily access the Thornton Heath area, where the project will initially be based
  • Be comfortable working outdoors and waiting at trapping sites when required

We are looking to build a team of volunteers with different availability, ideally with people who can offer one or two days during the working week. Therefore we are not expecting volunteers to be available every day or at all times. This will allow us to coordinate trapping work around everyone's individual commitments.

As you gain experience, there may be opportunities to take on more responsibility and become involved in the organisation and administration behind individual TNR cases.
