Animal Rescue Volunteer (Isle of Wight)
This role is being advertised during the Covid 19 pandemic because it supports our frontline animal welfare rescue work. Owing to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic it is possible that the start date for this role may change or be delayed. We will of course keep you updated throughout and will use any extra time we have to encourage you to take your RSPCA training courses and expand your knowledge of wildlife issues. If you have any questions about how Covid 19 may affect your volunteering please contact us through the ask Assemble facility.
Our Wildlife Casualty Volunteers (WCVs) and Wildlife Driver volunteers support the vital front line work of our Inspectorate. All volunteers are trained to collect and transport (and release where appropriate), sick, injured, suffering birds and small mammals and take them to RSPCA premises or appropriate veterinary establishments. During 2017 we recruited 150 volunteers across England and Wales and together they carried out over 1700 collections.
The WCV role is similar to a “first responder” type role. WCVs are asked on a weekly basis to say when they will be available to respond to calls from our National Control Centre to collect confined birds (up to the size of a gull) and small wild mammals mainly from members of the public and to take them to vets or approved wildlife or RSPCA facilities.
The application process usually takes around four weeks from receipt of initial application, through training and getting started in the role.
Once we receive applications we’ll contact applicants we feel will be well suited to the role. If after a short chat you’re happy to continue with the process we’ll invite you to a training and selection day.
