Dog Walker (based in Poynton)

Opportunity image

Overview of opportunity

Many of the dogs in our care have never experienced life in a loving, family home, or enjoyed their favourite past time – a long walk! As a volunteer dog walker, you would be helping the welfare of the dogs in our care by assisting our staff with walking and socialising them.

You would ensure that the dogs get the exercise and care they need, improving their welfare and giving them the best chance of finding them a forever home.

We would expand on your existing knowledge of our four-legged friends and would always consider your individual needs when assigning you a dog to walk.

You will be joining a team of Dog Walkers based at a kennels in Poynton

The RSPCA Cheshire Altrincham Branch

The Cheshire Altrincham Branch is one of the branches of RSPCA, but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area. Much of the animal welfare work of RSPCA is carried out through local branches, which is run by volunteers who have the support of the National Society of RSPCA.

The main activity of our branch is on rehoming animals, fundraising and animal welfare.

Volunteer Dog Walker responsibilities

  • Take our dogs, as directed by the volunteer coordinator or member of staff, for walkies!
  • As we are still getting to know our dogs, our volunteers must always keep them on a lead.
  • Follow the dog walking guidelines provided by the centre, including our health and safety procedures.
  • Assist with the assessment of dogs when asked by staff and where appropriate.

What we are looking for in a volunteer Dog Walker

  • Volunteers must be aged 16 or over.
  • Good knowledge of dogs and someone who can read their behaviour.
  • Must feel comfortable around dogs and have a patient and understanding nature.
  • Able and confident to walk dogs of all ages and sizes.
  • Can follow instructions as some of our dogs can be strong, so good physical health is necessary.
  • Someone who is flexible and can offer an ongoing commitment of 2 hours a week, ideally on Thursdays.

What we can offer you as a volunteer Dog Walker

  • It is a way to meet new people, make new friends in your local area, and get fitter and healthier.
  • A place where you will learn excellent new skills to add to your CV.
  • An excellent induction and training programme relevant to your role.
  • A fun environment at the heart of the local community.
  • The opportunity to make a huge difference to the welfare of the dogs in our care.
  • Reimbursement for any reasonable expenses you may incur whilst you are a volunteer with us.
