Branch Bookkeeper – East Hertfordshire Region
Are you passionate about animal welfare? Keen to volunteer but prefer a back-office role working from home? We are looking for someone who would like to take on the bookkeeping for our local Branch to help our Treasurer. This mainly involves loading and checking invoices, carrying out the bookkeeping duties for our shop and helping to sort gift aid claims.
Overview of the Branch Bookkeeper opportunity
We are looking for someone to volunteer as a Branch bookkeeper for our Branch. This role would play a vital role in supporting the Branches affairs so that it is governed and managed effectively, whilst continually having animal welfare at the forefront of their mind.
The work should entail approximately 7 hours per month. The volunteer should have access to a home PC and be willing to pick up finance information from our shop in Hitchin once a month.
About the RSPCA
Founded in 1824, we have been saving animals for almost 200 years and are proud to be the oldest welfare charity around. It has always been our vision to live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with compassion, so our volunteers and employees work tirelessly to ensure that all animals can live free from pain and suffering.
Through our numerous campaigns, we seek to raise standards of care and awareness of issues affecting animals today. We rely heavily on our volunteers, who play a significant role in enabling us to carry out this important animal welfare work every day!
The RSPCA Hertfordshire East Branch
Hertfordshire East is one of the branches of RSPCA, but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area. Much of the animal welfare work of RSPCA is carried out through local branches, which is run by volunteers who have the support of the National Society of RSPCA. The main activity of our branch is on rehoming and veterinary care.
Primary responsibilities of the Branch bookkeeper
- Use our accounting system XERO to log all our shop takings and reconcile with till receipts.
- Move all of our receipts through to our accounting system and record to the correct accounting lines.
- Work with our Branch Treasurer to ensure all accounting is recorded accurately.
What we are looking for in a volunteer:
We are particularly looking for someone who preferably has knowledge and experience in bookkeeping. The Branch use XERO as our accountancy system and so knowledge of this system would be advantageous. As a volunteer, you would be able to dedicate the time to carry out the bookkeeping duties but could do this from home. At certain points in the year there may be additional duties to carry out to help our Treasurer e.g., year end and Tax year end.
What we can offer you as a volunteer Branch Bookkeeper
- We will provide you with training on Branch financial processes.
- Ongoing support is also provided by local and national RSPCA staff and any additional training provided by the relevant branch.
- The platform to utilise your skills and experience to oversee the charity accounts to ensure we adhere to charity finance rules.
- The opportunity to gain new skills and develop existing ones, whilst making a real difference to the lives of animals.
Practical considerations
- To become our Bookkeeper, you will need to be aged 18 or over and have the relevant experience.
- Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
- Access to a home PC/Laptop or we do have an office in Baldock where with prior agreement, you may be able to use.
- References will also be required.
