Become a Dog Fosterer with the RSPCA - Make a Real Difference

We’re looking for compassionate and committed fosterers within driving distance of RSPCA West Hatch, Taunton (TA3 5RT) to care for dogs and puppies in their own homes. By fostering, you’ll play a vital role in improving animal welfare - and help us create space at our centres to rescue even more animals in need.

Why Fostering Matters

In recent months, we've seen a sharp rise in the number of dogs who have been abandoned, neglected, or abused. Many of these dogs flourish in foster homes, where they can begin to heal, rebuild trust, and prepare for a better future.

Some dogs in need of fostering may be involved in ongoing RSPCA investigations and are placed in our care while their case progresses. In these situations, the length of time they remain in foster can vary.

Fostering gives these dogs the best possible chance of recovery in a safe, calm, and loving environment.

Who Needs Fostering?

Some dogs struggle with the stress of kennels or have specific needs that make foster homes more suitable. These might include dogs who are:

  • Too young to be adopted
  • Nervous or needing confidence-building
  • Recovering from medical or behavioural issues
  • Involved in cruelty investigations (with potentially uncertain timescales)

As a fosterer, you’ll provide daily care and companionship until each dog is ready for adoption - or until their case is resolved. Foster placements can last from a few weeks to several months, and you’ll receive full support throughout from our experienced RSPCA team.

What You’ll Need

  • The ability to travel to the RSPCA centre and veterinary appointments as needed
  • Time, patience, and the ability to provide consistent care (without leaving the dog alone for long periods)
  • A willingness to follow positive reinforcement training methods (with our guidance)

Please note: Many of our dogs are not suitable to live with other pets or young children due to their individual needs. Each case is assessed carefully.

What We Provide

  • All food, bedding, equipment, and veterinary care
  • Full training and ongoing support from our team
  • Holiday cover and emergency backup if needed

Previous experience with dogs is useful but not essential—we’ll guide you through everything you need to know.
